With summer comes activity, heat, moisture, water sports and more. All of these things play a role in the lifespan of your watch and, more importantly, your watchstrap. One of the hottest trends on the market today is the use of NATO straps. These fabric straps – offered in a huge variety of colors and patterns – converts any watch from serious to sporty in an instant. Today, so many watch brands – across all price points – use NATO straps on their watches. Also referred to as military straps, NATO straps have their origins firmly rooted about four decades ago when nylon straps were offered to soldiers because they were durable, could be easily cleaned and were not expensive to buy. Interestingly, while NATO straps are also referred to as military straps, there were not made for NATO troops, instead they garnered their name from the G10 form British soldiers had to use to requisition a strap. They were first referred to, in the early 1970s, as G10 straps.

Typically made of nylon (though also offered in leather), these straps are usually easy to change and extremely functional. They typically feature a keeper through which the end of the strap is passed after looping though the watch lugs and across the back of the case. This double security offers peace of mind that if a spring bar or other lug element breaks, the case is still held in place by the other lug. Stripes have become the typical pattern for NATO straps, with the color combinations often denoting some special meaning. The great thing about these straps is that they can get wet, dry pretty quickly and usually don’t stick to the wrist. With constant water and sun, they may fade a little but that is part of the charm of a NATO strap. They are meant to be worn and are particularly good for rugged or extreme sports.



If you are the type who prefers the look and feel of a metal bracelet, that’s a good thing in summertime. Most of today’s metals are extremely sturdy. In fact, among the advantages of metal over fabric or rubber is that it holds up well in rugged outdoor terrains. The type of metal used naturally plays a role in the lifespan of a bracelet, but typically bracelets are long lasting. Titanium offers lightweight appeal, but steel and other metals offer a weight that some people enjoy feeling on the wrist. Naturally, metal is more expensive than most other materials (except for truly exotic leathers).

How a 'Leap Second' Was Added to 'Time' Without You Knowing It

A little over a month ago, on the night of June 30th (stretching into July 1), a "leap second" was added to time. It was the 26th such “second” added to the “clock” since 1972, though no fuss was made about it in the media. The reason for the extra second, according to scientists at the International Earth Rotation Service in France, was to compensate for the slowing of Earth’s rotation, which has been occurring over time—partly because of our warming oceans.



Recalibrating time scales is no easy feat – especially in light of atomic timing. According to HH Magazine (the magazine of the Haute Horlogerie Fondation): “Meteorologists long measured time based on astronomical data. One day corresponded to the interval between two transits of the Sun above the Greenwich meridian at noon. Defined as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), this duration could be subdivided, using the sexagesimal system bequeathed to us by ancient civilizations, into 24 equal hours, then into 1,440 minutes and 86,400 seconds. All that changed, however, in 1955 [with] the advent of cesium atomic clocks. They measure time with unprecedented accuracy, varying by a single second every three million years. And so international atomic time (TAI, from the French temps atomique international) supplanted astronomical time. In 1967, the International Time Bureau at the Paris Observatory introduced the atomic hour based on the atomic second. Since then, some five hundred atomic clocks spread between different laboratories have helped define it.”

However, as scientists tried to define exact time, they were met with a single reality that the atomic clocks cannot ascertain: Earth does not rotate with exact precision. It slows with moon phases, tides, earthquakes and other natural phenomena. The general consensus is that as the polar caps melt, the water moving toward the equator changes Earth’s energies and rotation. Of course, that change is miniscule – amounting to fractions of a second over decades. To compensate, science conceived of the “leap second” in 1972.

According to Christophe Roulet’s article in HH Magazine: “Suspending atomic time compensates Earth's drift to give Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) or international civil time, which is atomic time adjusted for the Earth's rotation.”

Interjecting these leap seconds is not an exact science. Because Earth’s geophysical make up changes, the addition of a second can’t be planned in advance. It is added only when the scientists at IERS deem it necessary (when the gap exceeds 0.9 seconds). Then, it is added either on June 30 or December 31 — whichever is nearer.

Opponents to the added leap second come mostly from the business side, claiming it wreaks havoc on computer systems. Scientists naturally disagree, stating that our lives are most in sync with solar time. Apparently, it is an issue up for review this November, when the International Telecommunication Union meets.

NATO straps are easy to change and usually slip through the top lugs, pass over the case back and though the bottom lugs. Metal

Bracelets made of stainless steel, titanium and other alloys are strong and hold up well in outdoor terrains and activities. Titanium is very lightweight, and many people in warm climates prefer this feel on the wrist. With today’s technology, steel and titanium can also be found in a host of colors thanks to PVD and other coating treatments. One of the nice things about bracelet watches is that they are easy to care for — they can be rinsed and cleaned with a soft cloth. The downside: depending on the material, they can scratch.

The line between the living and the dead will soon be wafer thin. It's a good time to open the crypt of dead wristwatches and dig up an old favorite. Behold, here is my trusty old Timex Weekender with Tachymeter markings. It's an old favorite, but it has lain dead in my watch box for several months.

The Guts of a Timex Weekender!

To revive a Timex Weekender, all you need is a new watch battery. The case back calls for a CR-2016 battery to serve as the heart and soul of the timepiece. Perhaps it's not surprising that it has such a commonplace battery to keep the ticker running?
